A cave fire on the shores of a San Diego bay has claimed the lives of two firefighters.

The San Diego Fire Department said two firefighters were transported to a hospital in critical condition.

The cause of the blaze was under investigation.

Firefighters were searching for a man who had been inside a cave, the fire department said in a statement.

A woman who was found in the cave told authorities that she was asleep and woke up to see flames in her house.

She was taken to a nearby hospital and was treated and released.

No one was injured in the fire.

The cave fire occurred about 10:40 a.m.

Friday.

Firefighters responded to a report of a cave-in on the San Diego side of the Bay Bridge and found a fire in a rock shelter.

Fire crews tried to extinguish the fire, but the blaze continued to grow.

Two firefighters were taken to the hospital.
